MR. ALBERT O’BRIEN - from Cooperstown...is in his third year at Hyde Bay as English and reading tutor...lives with his family in Cooperstown and teaches at the Cooperstown High School.

HENRY NORMAN - from Baltimore, Md. ...in his sixteenth year as chef at Hyde Bay...holds the same position at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. during the winter.

JOHN WOOTEN - from Washington, D.C. ...second year at Hyde Bay...is keeping the dishwashing department functioning.

MARVIN KING - from Baltimore, Md. ...his first year at Hyde Bay and is fitting into our routine very well...he and rotating UL.s work in the dining room.

VOCABULARY: In future weeks we will be using many of the following names. We thought it might be helpful to you if we gate you an early brief description.

    Beaver Valley - a large tract of land south of Cooperstown that we are using for camping and nature trips.

    Nebo - is a mountainside about nine miles from camp were we send groups of boys on overnight trips. We own about forty acres of wilderness which gives the boys an opportunity, to camp in unpopulated surroundings.

    Lookout - is the mountainside just in back of camp within hiking distance. Again this is used for overnight trips (supper and breakfast)and overlooks our end of the Lake.

    Trenton Falls - is a trip to the Adirondacks (three days) for all boys who have passed their Junior Lifesaving and are with us for the full eight weeks. This involves three days of skiing, swimming, and canoeing.

    Around—the—Lake, Up-the-Lake, or Down-the-Lake - this trip is either for the day or overnight at the foot of Natty Bumpo’s Cave, depending on the weather and the age of the boys.

    Natty Bumpo -  a cave situated high above the Lake referred to by Cooper in his writings about this area.

    Susguehanna - The canoes are put in about two miles south of Cooperstown and paddle some seven to eight miles down the river to a camp spot where the boys stay overnight and are then picked up during the following morning.

    Sunken Islands – is a large formation of rocks in the middle of the Lake referred to in Cooper’s Tales. It was once well above the water but now rests a few feet under the surface. The boys enjoy swimming in and around the rocks.

    Hacker - is our 22—foot custom built launch which we use extensively for water skiing, transportation and sailboat rescuing. It is powered by an outboard Chrysler engine.

    S.T. - is our small motor boat that boys ten years and older learn how to run as soon as they have passed their N.Y. State Motor Boat Course. It is powered by a 5 h.p.Johnson outboard motor.

    Comets - this refers to our fleet of four sailboats.

    The “55” - our new matched Chrysler fiberglass boat used for water skiing and aquaplaning. It powered by a 55 h.p. Chrysler engine.
