Comments and Correspondence 2008

Andrew Astman 02/11/2008 - I’ve been thinking about Hyde Bay as a result of having heard Pope Brock interviewed by Diane Rehm on NPR last Thursday. I mean, how many Pope Brock’s in the world can there be? I found his picture on the internet and recognized him, though at Hyde Bay he wore his hair distinctly short, which he no longer does. There were so many bright and talented kids at HB that I thought surely one or more of them would attain some degree of fame, but Pope is the first one I’ve heard about. Have I missed something?
By the way, do you get many out-of-the-blue e-mails from former campers (like myself) who’ve stumbled on your website? Any interesting stories?
And speaking of stumbling . . . in my local branch library here in Texas I stumbled on a new book entitled “The Clarks of Cooperstown,” by Nicholas Weber, which I read (Will anyone else ever take out that book?). I knew they were a force in Cooperstown, but I never realized just how great. An interesting bunch. As a result of reading that, I started “William Cooper’s Town,” by Alan Taylor. It’s not exactly an exciting read, slow in fact, and before I plowed through very much of it I had to return it to the library but I’ll eventually take it out again and continue. The only thing that intrigued me was that Richfield Springs and Cherry Valley were well established towns before Cooperstown even existed!
